Kou Reirin, the model Scout
I really enjoyed watching the first half of season of “Though I Am an Inept Villainess” aired in the Summer 2026 anime season. My personal highlinghts from it were the characters and their dynamics with one another, chief amongst them being the protagonist: Kou Reirin. While thinking about why her character is so charming, it has occured to me that she’s (most likely unintentionally) the embodiment of the perfect Scout. I’ll go trough the Scout Law, and to each point I’ll bring evidence demonstrating how Kou Reirin is a model Scout.
For context, I’m a veteran Scout, and Scouting has been a part of my life for the last 17 years of my life. Since I’m not a native English speaker and thus have been taught the Hungarian version of the Scout Law, I took the English phrasing of it from the WOSM website.
This breakdown assumes one has watched the series and will naturally contain spoilers. You have been warned.
1. A Scout’s honor is to be trusted.
Maybe honor isn’t something one would think about when listing Reirin’s virtues, but troughout the anime she never once tells a lie. Even though she cannot explain herself due to the curse put on her by Shu Keigetsu, she remains adamant and does not resort to making up excuses for herself. And despite making many promisses during the 11 episodes she fulfills them all, never once going back on them no matter how much she has to exert herself.
2. A Scout is loyal.
Reirin is a very loyal person to just everybody that she feels responsible for. This includes other members of the Kou clan, her cousin (the crown prince), and the two people part of her new life (as Shu Keigetsu): her court lady, Leelee and her new friend, Keigetsu herself. While both of the former have committed repeated attrocities towards her, she responds by continued kindness for both of them, even covering up Leelee’s attempted murder on her and helping Keigetsu not face any punishment for the body swap. But even while she stays at the Shu residence she doesn’t forsake her true family, helping Kou Kenshuu when she is cursed by Shu Gabi.
3. A Scout’s duty is to be useful and help others.
Even during exile Reirin gets up early, farms vegetables, cleans the house and performs a variety of chores. She’s skilled in all sorts of handycrafts and even medicine, making her an absurdly capable princess (far surpassing Snow White or Cinderella in this regard). And even beyond exercising her existing capabilities, when Shu Keigetsu (in Reirin’s body) falls gravely ill she sets out to help her by drawing the bow of warding all night (not the only all-nighter she pulls during the series) despite having no experience with archery. She does this while getting considerably hurt in the process and from genuine concern about her (as opposed to of concern of her body).
4. A Scout is a friend to all and brother to every other Scout.
This point needs a bit of twisting because there are no Scouts at the Ei Kingdom’s maiden court, but Reirin is friendly towards all others there and cares deeply for her servants and peers alike. While this is not explicitly shown in the anime, it is deducable from the behavior of said peers and servants, while the opposite can be said about Shu Keigetsu, who is an adversary to all around her.
5. A Scout is courteous.
With her being the most respected court maiden, she gets full points in courtly manners. She’s complemented on her refinement multiple times troughout the series, this trait of hers is universally acknowledged. The amount of support she gets from the Kou clan also proves that this behavior isn’t just a facade for her superiors, she is indeed kind to even to those serving her.
6. A Scout is friend to animals.
This is best showcased in the first episode when one of the dungeon rats consume the poison meant for her, she takes it out in her dress to bury it properly later; an act not suited for a stereotypical court maiden, but natural for Reirin. Then later when the same rat ends up poisoning the lion (that is supposed to “judge”) her, she feels sorry for that as well even though it came close to eating her. Reirin’s philosophy towards animals in general is an acceptance of nature’s “eat or to be eaten” law, and while she sees animals as utilities (e.g. for her medical experiments) she is never excessively cruel towards them.
7. A Scout obeys orders of his parents, Patrol Leader or Scoutmaster without question.
When Kou Kenshuu sais the trait she’s looking for in a maiden is grit, Reirin takes this as a command, and strives to become ever so gritty. The extraordinary events and her mischieviousness makes her appear as a rulebreaker, however, in spirit she’s quite obedient. On multiple occasions when she’s told to be a villainess, she obediently responds by saying “yes I am a villainess” despite having done nothing to deserve that title.
8. A Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties.
This law may as well be the core of Reirin’s charming personality. She’s a true optimist who can always look at the bright side of life and completely ignore the false accusations and her haters (or Shu Keigetsu’s for that matter). In her original life, she kept smiling innocently while constantly struggling against her frail body and poor health. She was able to completely mask her condition to others (like Keigetsu). She also reframes all of Leelee’s harassment attempts as acts of kindness, while a slip of tounge reveals she knew they weren’t ment as such.
9. A Scout is thrifty.
During the eleven episodes, Reirin is completely self-sufficient: the only gifts she receives are a bit of salt, the decorative pieces from the Ghost Festival (with very little utility), and the bucket of Dragon Spring Water from the crown prince in the 10th episode. She produces the vegetables by rescuing old leftovers in the house, she makes Leelee’s ceremonial gartments from her own cut-up clothes and makes decorative balls as (compulsory) gifts for the Ghost Festival while she gets no support from the Shu clan for the event.
10. A Scout is clean in thought, word and deed.
At the final episodes, we find out that Reirin was hindering Shu Gabi’s curse by keeping a clean place. Being a court maiden, surrounded by only other women and eunuchs, following strict etiquette and refined speech; her purity is unquestioned. Additionally, her optimistic philosophy proves her purity in thought as well.
Summary
All in all, Reirin gets flying colors for being a model Scout. Personally I’d love to see her as a Patrol Leader supervising a group of cubs, but I doubt we’ll even see her in a motherly role. Whatever the future of the series may hold, I’ll gladly watch Reirin being who she is.
